- This course is about global ideologies and conceptions of world order, and how these views of the world have come into confrontation with each other in recent years. For example, the Western European idea that the world is composed of individual, democratic and secular nation-states clashed with the idea of global socialism promoted by communist countries, resulting in the Cold War, which lasted from 1948 to 1990. A new cold war between secular nationalism and religious nationalism erupted in the 1990s. In the 21st century, globalization has emerged as a way of looking at the world as a single integrated economic system that has significant political, military, and culture implications—and has encountered considerable resistance. Many acts of terrorism, anarchy, and protest are aimed at the “new world order” of global society. The aim of this course is to gain insight into the ideological trends and tensions that have affected public life at this moment in world history, and to imagine alternative global futures in which these trends may be altered and reconceived.
